Brass Monkey • The Beastie Boys

“This girl walked by, she gave me the eye
I reached in the locker, grabbed the Spanish Fly
I put it with the Monkey, mixed it in the cup
Went over to the girl, “Yo baby, what’s up?””

The primary criteria rule for the Favorite Flows playlist is that I can only have one song from an artist...that way, it puts pressure on me to actually analyze how much I really love this song...and for me, this rule and this process has worked out well for me...until it came to choose my favorite Beastie Boys' song.

You can ignore all of their later stuff...as great as their musical library is, nothing in their discography can overshadow the greatness that is License to Ill. Sorry kids, that's the truth. This album has 13 songs that range from really good to all-time classics...when you have an album that has "no-fillers" you have something special.

Soooo...why Brass Monkey? Simple...my sons. Talk about timeless, I played this song when they were infants...and the love of this song was instantaneous. To this day, they play Brass Monkey on a frequent basis...passing this song off onto their friends, who then pass it on.

Yeah, Paul Revere...No Sleep Till Brooklyn...Posse In Effect...all are songs I've listened to thousands of time, but none of them had the same impact as Brass Monkey. From the moment you hear that middle school rented sax and the hit of the 808...then to hear three of the most talented emcees intertwine their rhymes like your grandma knitting you a scarf to keep you warm...it just all feels right...
